Montérégie / Rive-Sud
Montégérie St-Hyacinthe

Geography: The Montérégie Region is known as the "Garden of Quebec" because of its fertile soil and relatively mild winters. Stretching from the Ontario border in the west, this vast region hugs the southern shore of both the St. Lawrence and Ottawa Rivers and reaches across vast plains into the highlands of the Haute-Yamaska. A group of mountains called the Monteregian mountain chain are scattered here and there across the region, forming a beautiful backdrop to apple orchards, vineyards, and rivers such as the Richelieu and Châteauguay.

Population: A large and growing population lives in a series of communities along what is known as the South Shore across the St. Lawrence River from Montreal. Despite heavy rush hour traffic, thousands upon thousands of South Shore residents commute to the city daily. A large number of people also live scattered throughout the Montérégie region in small cities and towns.

Economy: Like most large population centres, the South Shore has many industries, businesses and services. The economy of the Montérégie region is largely based on various types of agriculture and dairy farming.

Ministry: Ten French-speaking Fellowship Baptist Churches minister in this region, including autonomous churches at Longueuil, Saint-Bruno, Mont Saint-Hilaire, Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Saint-Hyacinthe, Vaudreuil and Acton Vale.

There are three mission works in the region receiving partial support through the Fellowship French Mission. They include Châteauguay, under the leadership of Gilles and Michelle Paquin; Saint-Hubert led by Gilles and Monique Saulnier and Valleyfield, under the pastoral care of Robert and Francine Beauchamp.

There is also a growing desire to see another mission work planted in an area of rapid suburban development on the south shore, east of Châteauguay. An estimated 70,000 people live in the three neighbouring municipalities of Sainte-Catherine, Saint-Constant and Delson. Funds from Project 2006 have been set aside for this new church plant.

Please pray for:

  1. The mission work at Châteauguay and the leadership of Gilles and Michelle Paquin.
  2. The mission work at Saint-Hubert with Gilles and Monique Saulnier.
  3. The mission work at Valleyfield under the leadership of Robert and Francine Beauchamp.
  4. The planting of a new church on the south shore near Sainte-Catherine.
  5. The continuing faithful ministry of the autonomous churches in the region.
